The Producers Guild of America released their nominations for their annual awards ceremony today, and as always, it seems to be a pretty good Academy Award projection list. This year, the Academy has the potential to nominate 5 to 10 films in the Best Picture category. It is good to see a mention to Bridesmaids and Moneyball, and many people are saying Midnight in Paris is good to see. I have not yet seen this, but it is at the top of my list. Anyway, for those of you who don't know or need a recap, the PGA and Oscar relation breaks down as such:
Many of the same members in the PGA are members in the Academy with high standing. Since 2007, the PGA choice for best feature and Oscar choice for Best Picture have coincided exactly (No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, and The King's Speech, in order). The other selections since the award began in 1989 have been either the winner of Best Picture or one of the top two final contenders, such as The Crying Game, Apollo 13, and The Aviator, to name a few. In short, odds are the list of Best Picture nominees will be from this list, with a few possible changes. It is a near certainty that the winner will be from this list, though that isn't much of a surprise either, as no one thought a movie not featured here would, anyway.
The most surprising is no mention of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, which has topped many critic's lists this year. Though looking at the Guild's usual picks, it may not be such a surprise.
It is a fine selection though, especially if looked at from the Producer standpoint. Notably films like War Horse, The Artist, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Hugo have large and important emphasis on production value (as well as directing, a tight coincidence).

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 3, 2012) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today the motion picture and long-form television nominations for the 23rd Annual Producers Guild Awards. The categories include: The Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures; The Producers Guild of America Producer of the Year Award in Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures; and The David L. Wolper Producer of the Year Award in Long-Form Television. The documentary film category and other television category nominations were already announced by the Guild in December 2011.
All 2012 Producers Guild Award winners will be announced on January 21, 2012 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year, the Producers Guild will also award special honors to Leslie Moonves (Milestone Award), Steven Spielberg (David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures), Don Mischer (Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television), Stan Lee (Vanguard Award), and IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY (The Stanley Kramer Award). The 2012 Producers Guild Awards co-chairs are Paula Wagner and Michael Manheim.
